Current project
We’re building a garden studio in Suffolk. It’s an oak frame with turf roof and a straw bale infill. It will be finished with lime plaster. You can see the latest photos of the build here.

The Natural Building Company is building a small demo lime kiln in partnership with Chalk East.
Although we often use lime in our projects, we’ve never tried to produce it before, so this will be an exciting new experience for us.
We’ll be building the kiln and firing it as part of Whitlingham Country Park’s heritage weekend on the 11th and 12th September.
Lime is made by burning chalk or limestone to produce quicklime. This is slaked with the addition of water to produce lime putty or a dry hydrate. Here in Norfolk we’re lucky enough to have natural deposits of chalk, so we’ll be mining it from the site and burning it in our kiln. We should be able to use the lime we make for mortar or plaster. More details soon, we hope to see you there…
